Hi everyone I have a question about a Phillie that I bought not to long ago,I could not bare know that she would leave in those conditions ,she was nothing but skin and bones,I hand not had the opportunity to take her to the vet. I'm working out of town too much but my wife told me that BONE that her nickname, sweats too much she is gaining weight but not as fast as we would like her to.
In the heat, it seems to be harder to rehabilitate a horse. It is kind of like us, if we are out in the heat, we tend to sweat and lose weight also, so her body is probably working twice as hard as it would at a cooler time of the year. I would advise getting her to the vet ASAP if she was too far down.
Thanks Rebecca I will take her as soon as I get home but I'm working out of state and dont know how long it will be, my wife told me tht she looks and acts normal but just the sweating is what bothers her ,then again my wife is just learning about this things.
Hi Meno, haven't had to chance to meet you yet or welcome you to Blackwater ranch forum, but anyway, welcome.
I posted not to long ago about my mare, she was over heated, through my research and taking her into the vet, her problem was, she wasn't sweating enough...sweat is good, it is their natural way of staying cool, believe it or not.
If you can give her some electrolytes in a bucket of cool water or over her feed. Mine weren't drinking enough to keep them hydrated so I started soaking their beet pulp more, making it mushy. Yes, I use beetpulp. You can do a search for beet pulp and see what is being said about it. I started useing it because I was low on hay. I used it this winter to help hold my horses weight, I would add hot water, let it stand for about 1 hour, then mix their other feed right in with it, I use 2 cups of beet pulp to 2 1/2 cups water, unless I want more mush..(HAHA), then I add more water.
Tell us about your filly, how old is she? Anyway, hope this helps!
Hi Julia thanks for the welcome, now my other horses are fine they don't sweat much or any at all, my horses are on the loose and I only feed when I go to my land or my wife does it, we take rolls of hay, and we go at least 4 times a week and feed them some more hay and the feed we give them twice that day that we go none are loosing weight and she is gaining but not as fast as we taught.
If she is sweating that much then you should give her free choice salt the loose kind, not the blocks. It is easier for them to get the salt they need if it is loose.
Loose salt, you can get it at the feed store, put it in a something that the horses can get to easy, but since you have them on pasture, you would want to find somewhere easy access but covered incase it rains. Loose Salt is a very good idea for all your horses, it will help with their water intake, give her back what she is loosing, buy sweating. Mine have loose salt out in their pasture, I check it to see how much is in there, if needed I replace, some days they hit it more then others, I also have loose min/vita out there for them.

I just ran across this ad on Craigslist. Didn't know if anyone would be interested in helping the filly find a home. go to craigslist.com, and in the search box type in 160624039. that will bring up the ad with info and pics.
