Tammy, my wife, has suffered a severe stroke and is currently doing rehab to learn to walk and talk again. I am dedicated to her recovery effort and will not be training horses anymore. I don't have the time and cannot risk injury. I appreciate all of you who have had horses in training and all of you who have inquired about training. Thank you for supporting Blackwater Ranch.

I'll begin by saying I have had horses since I was a tadpole rode along with either of my parents from the time I could walk. We didn't have those fancy kiddie pads that go behind back then, so when I was teeny I got plopped on front of either mom or dad between them and the saddle horn. And when I got a wee bit bigger but not big enough to yet ride alone I just got a belt to hold onto around their middles and told to snug up close behind the saddle. I remember one time Pa riding out a bit of an…

I never really liked horses that much.
That was until my father brought us to our uncle's ranch back in Wyoming. As a suburban kid, I really hated the country. It was hot, it was humid, there were scorpions and TV shows, particularly the cartoons, were all reruns. Nothing works.
I remembered that the only reason I actually joined my folks rather sleepover with my grandparents was because our teacher wanted us to submit an essay regarding our Thanksgiving vacation. Originally, dad planned on sp…

Ok so after several x-rays and an ultrasound, we have learned that Dusty injured his DDF tendon. There is a core lesion and several of the tendons are thickened. The vet suggested we come back in 6 months for a follow up since Dusty is not limping all the time. He said we will just have to wait and see. He told us to hand walk him or let my niece ride him for 30 min a day at a walk only. Also suggested feeding him Platinum Performance CJ?? to help the healing process. Said if Dusty starts to lim…

I am keeping Shiloh at my uncle's house, he is actually on my dad's property that my gpa left him but anyway, I hadn't been out to ride him in almost a month. I went out there Sunday to work with him. I have never made him longe before so I decided we were going to work on that before I rode him because it had been a while and he is still young. He took to it like a duck to water. We did that for a little while and then I jumped on him and he was the same horse I rode a month ago. No problems wh…

Blackwater Ranch Welcomes Clyde, a really nice looking sorrel, with four white socks owned by Sherry and Ron. Clyde is here for boarding and some refining. When they recently bought Clyde he would ride and not buck but he didn't know much. He was very stiff and unresponsive, didn't know anything about leg pressure, had almost no stop and absolutely no back up.
After two short weeks he has become very responsive to leg pressure. I began the process of going brideless with him last night and beca…

He did something to his hind leg and can no longer put weight on it, we dont know if he got tagged by a snake or if he twisted it. The vet said it will be ok, but he moans every time he walks and it's twice as big as his other leg. I hope he will be ok.

I saw another post on this topic and thought I'd share this essay I wrote. It was my final essay as a highschool student.
Horses are like us in the fact that they are susceptible to many different diseases. One of the most important viral diseases of horses is Equine Infectious Anemia. This virus is a lentivirus which is the same type as human immune deficiency disease and is transmitted through blood, saliva, milk and body secretions. In this research paper I have included information containi…

I was told by other neighbors in the beginning of April that my neighbor that had recently bought a 7yo stud was going to put the horse down. I found this wierd, as they had just had him cut. I went over and talked with them. They informed me then that the 7yo had come back positive on his coggin's but their other one was still neg. I had moved my horse prior to finding this out and brought him home since he was "exposed" to EIA and I didn't want to chance any harm coming to other horses because…
